boy. nbc's gabe gutierrez has been covering at the scene for us. he's with us from there tonight. gabe, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. there's still a lot we don't know about how this standoff finally ended. but for the family of the 5-year-old hostage and the dozens of local and federal law enforcement who worked so hard to rescue him, the important thing is, it's over. seven days after he was abducted from his school bus, a 5-year-old hostage was freed by police, his captor dead, and a delicate standoff, finally over. >> at approximately 3:12 this afternoon, fbi agents safely recovered the child who has been held hostage for nearly a week. >> reporter: police say 56-year-old jimmy lee dykes boarded a stopped school bus last tuesday demanding two children. when the bus driver, charles poland objected, dykes killed him and grabbed a 5-year-old boy named ethan, who has a mild form of autism. >> i started our discussion with mr. dykes. he feels like he has a story that's important to him, although it's very complex. >> reporter: ethan had been held captive in an un

is at the police station in lancaster, texas where the suspect was taken. mark, what can you tell us? >> yeah, lester, that gun range was chris kyle's second home practically. we're 100 miles east in lancaster, texas. this is where the suspect is from. he's being held in the police department. already gone before a judge, arraigned on two counts of capital murder. we have some video from the scene on where routh was captured. we're still trying to get more information on him. we know at this point as far as a criminal history, he was convicted of dwi last year. that's all we've got on him. what we are trying to find out is motive and what if any relationship he had with chris kyle and the other victim, chad littlefield. the texas highway patrol is one of the agencies investigating. here's what they say he did right after the murders. >> he traveled back to his residence in lancaster. lancaster police department was able to catch up with him there. they took him into custody without incident after a brief pursuit. >> all right. police tell us they have a long way to go on this investigation. s

in iraq was spent providing sniper cover for u.s. troops in some of the war's most intense urban battles. >> every person i killed i have a clear conscience of, because they were actively trying to harm americans, allies or civilians. >> reporter: his skills earned him a reputation with insurgents. >> they put a bounty on your head. >> reporter: they did. you make it through four, five tours in combat and he comes back and dies like that. it's just a shame. chris kyle had recently spoken out against calls for broader gun controls accusing the president of being against the second amendment. kyle said he was raised to be patriotic. his co-author says chris struggled to determine how his life should be ordered. god, country, family, or god, family, country. that faith in god especially saw kyle through his last combat tour when he was shot twice. one bullet stopped by his body armor, the other deflected off his goggles. >> i have a guardian angel. i'm sure he hates me. i'd come home, break my toe when i went up the stair, but every time i went overseas kept he safe. >> reporter: chris kyle
